Stone Grades

A GRADE

  • Pounamu (nephrite and bowenite) without visible mineral inclusions such as iron.
  • No visual fractures compromising structural integrity.
  • Deep, vivid or bright colour character.

B GRADE

  • Pounamu (nephrite and bowenite) without visual mineral inclusions such as iron.
  • Some visual fratures complimenting stone by creating character.
  • No visual fractures compromising structural integrity.
  • Deep, vivid or bright colour character.

C GRADE

  • Pounamu with minor scattered visible mineral inclusions such as iron.
  • Some visual fratures complimenting stone by creating character. No visual fractures compromising structural integrity.
  • Deep, vivid or bright colour character.
  • Includes Kokopu variety that are hard, tight stone, without visible fractures.

 

D GRADE

  • Pounamu with medium visible mineral inclusions such as iron.
  • Some visual fratures complimenting stone by creating character. No visual fractures compromising structural integrity.
  • Less Deep, vivid or bright colour character.
  • Includes Kokopu variety that are less hard and no visible fractures.

E GRADE

  • Low iron content Totoweka, no visible fractures.
  • Hard, low fractured Kokopu.

F GRADE

  • High iron content Totoweka some visible fractures.
  • High fractured Pounamu of any type compromising carving structure.
